Terra cotta is a clay-bodied, fired product that can be glazed or unglazed. The material has been around since the Romans and has been used extensively throughout Europe.

In the early part of the century a building boom took place in North America. Most buildings were designed with stone, however, due to a lack of supply, terra cotta was used. As a replacement it was inexpensive and easy to use.
